Magic Sort starts with a simple premise (sort the differently coloured liquids into individual bottles), before quickly ramping up the difficulty so that completing each level feels more satisfying than the last.

What makes the game so tricky is that you’ve only got a certain number of bottles to work with, meaning you can quickly run out of places to stash each colour when you need to get to what’s underneath. Think of it like a game of solitaire, where you only have so many available piles to place each card on. Run out of options, and it’s game over.

Those are the basics, but things get more complicated quickly. For starters, you don’t always know what colours are hidden underneath the topmost liquid in each bottle. Get unlucky, and you may reveal the exact wrong colour and find yourself backed into a corner with no more moves to make.

Other times the entire contents of a bottle will be hidden from view until you’ve made enough progress through a level. So you’ll have to wait until you’ve completely sorted the green liquid, for example, before the sheet gets ripped off a new bottle and you can see what you’re dealing with.

Thankfully, Magic Sort equips you with a few (limited-use!) tricks up your sleeve to respond to its more challenging levels. An undo button lets you go back a turn if you make a mistake, while a shuffle button lets you randomise the order of colours within a bottle in the hope that the one you need makes it to the top. If all else fails, you can also add a new bottle to the line-up to give yourself a bit more breathing room.

Much like in a game of solitaire, it pays to plan ahead in Magic Sort. Don’t just think about the colour that you’re pouring from one bottle to another, think about the colour of the liquid underneath it that you’ll access with each turn. If the lower colour is hidden, be sure to have a backup plan in case pouring away the liquid above it doesn’t reveal the colour that you need.

It’s also worth knowing that you have a little more flexibility than you may have thought at first glance in Magic Sort. Poured liquids only need to match the top colour of the bottle they’re going into, rather than matching the whole bottle. It’s a helpful thing to know when you need somewhere to stash a colour of liquid before you’re ready to complete a whole bottle.

Success in Magic Sort is about consistency. Build up a streak of wins to increase the rewards you get from beating each level, and don’t be afraid to bust out the boosters if the alternative is losing a winning streak. Daily challenges also offer an alternative way of earning rewards.
