After <a href="/wiki/Edessa" title="Edessa">Edessa</a> fell to Muslims in 1144, Melisende urged European intervention, helping set the <a href="/wiki/Second_Crusade" title="Second Crusade">Second Crusade</a> in motion. Her relationship with Baldwin deteriorated as she resisted sharing authority with him. After a brief division of the kingdom, Baldwin invaded her territory and forced her to abdicate. A further outbreak at the <a href="/wiki/Sloane_Hospital_for_Women" title="Sloane Hospital for Women">Sloane Maternity Hospital</a>, where she was working, resulted in 25 cases and two deaths in early 1915. She was again confined, remaining so until her death in 1938. Her nickname became a term for anyone who spreads disease. No other carrier of typhoid was confined for as long as she was.
