The Direct Fick Method is a method of measuring cardiac output using the Fick Principle. It divides the oxygen intake by the difference in oxygen content of aortic blood and mixed venous blood.
according to fick principle, the flow equals the total quantity of a substance added or consumed per unit time divided by the difference between arterial and venous concentration of this substance. the cardiac output is determined by Fick's method using O2 as the test substance according to the following steps: 1- the total O2 consumption is measured with a respirometer over a period of 10 minutes and calculated as ml O2 per one minute 2- Simultaneously, the O2 concentration in the arterial blood is determined. the arterial blood sample is obtained by a needle puncture of a superficial artery. the O2 concentration is calculated as ml O2 per one ml blood. 3- also, a simultaneous determination of O2 concentrations in mixed venous blood is made. the mixed venous blood sample is obtained from the pulmonary artery by a catheter. the O2 concentration is also calculated as ml O2/ml blood. 4- the cardiac output is then calculated: CO = O2 consumption
