That goes for both the human achieve\u00adments that have hap\u00adpened there as well of the nat\u00adur\u00adal envi\u00adron\u00adments they\u2019ve hap\u00adpened in and around, both of which define&nbsp;Amer\u00adi\u00adca equal\u00adly and have made it the kind of place the word&nbsp;<em>sub\u00adlime<\/em>,&nbsp;mix\u00ading in as it does a tinge of fear with admi\u00adra\u00adtion, was coined to describe. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ansel_Adams\">Ansel Adams<\/a>, who ascend\u00aded to the top of the pho\u00adto\u00adgraph\u00adic pan\u00adtheon with his career spent shoot\u00ading&nbsp;the 20th-cen\u00adtu\u00adry Amer\u00adi\u00adcan West, seemed born to cap\u00adture that sub\u00adlim\u00adi\u00adty.<\/p>\n<p>How did he do it? The 1958 doc\u00adu\u00admen\u00adtary&nbsp;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=M-BhJQqHXfQ\">Ansel Adams, Pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adph\u00ader<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;(also <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/AnselAdamsPhotographer\">avail\u00adable on Archive.org<\/a>) offers a twen\u00adty-minute look into the life and work of the man whose name has become a byword for the majes\u00adtic black-and-white Amer\u00adi\u00adcan land\u00adscape. We also hear a few of his philo\u00adsoph\u00adi\u00adcal posi\u00adtions on his work. \u201cPer\u00adhaps music is the most expres\u00adsive of the arts,\u201d says Adams him\u00adself after a few min\u00adutes at the piano. \u201cHow\u00adev\u00ader, as a pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adph\u00ader, I believe that cre\u00adative pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adphy, when prac\u00adticed in terms of its inher\u00adent qual\u00adi\u00adties, may also reveal end\u00adless hori\u00adzons of mean\u00ading.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"oc-center-da\">\n<div data-fuse=\"22871471544\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>We then see and hear about all the (high\u00adly pre-dig\u00adi\u00adtal) cam\u00aderas and asso\u00adci\u00adat\u00aded tools with which Adams engaged in that prac\u00adtice before head\u00ading out to the coast to watch him in action. \u201cLike every good pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adph\u00ader,\u201d says the nar\u00adra\u00adtor, Adams \u201cpre-visu\u00adal\u00adizes his final print right there,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openculture.com\/2015\/07\/how-to-take-photographs-like-ansel-adams.html\">a tech\u00adnique&nbsp;we\u2019ve pre\u00advi\u00adous\u00adly cov\u00adered here on Open Cul\u00adture<\/a>. Then out comes the light meter, in order to \u201cesti\u00admate what expo\u00adsure he needs now and what devel\u00adop\u00adment he needs lat\u00ader.\u201d Every choice Adams made \u2014 about \u201cfilm, lens, fil\u00adter, lens exten\u00adsion, lens aper\u00adture, shut\u00adter set\u00adting,\u201d and more \u2014 he metic\u00adu\u00adlous\u00adly record\u00aded in his note\u00adbook.<\/p>\n<p>After devel\u00adop\u00ading and exam\u00adin\u00ading the neg\u00ada\u00adtive in his lab, he tries out a \u201ctest expo\u00adsure,\u201d which pleas\u00ading\u00adly turns out as a \u201cquite well-bal\u00adanced\u201d image, but one that nev\u00ader\u00adthe\u00adless sug\u00adgests improv\u00ading tweaks&nbsp;for the next one. (Col\u00ador film\u2019s rel\u00ada\u00adtive lack of flex\u00adi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty in this&nbsp;part of the process kept&nbsp;black-and-white Adams\u2019 pho\u00adto\u00adgraph\u00adic form of choice.) \u201cOnce Adams has achieved the print he wants,\u201d the nar\u00adra\u00adtor tells us, \u201che is able, sim\u00adply by con\u00adtrol\u00adling expo\u00adsure and pro\u00adcess\u00ading, to make from one neg\u00ada\u00adtive hun\u00addreds of fine prints in a day. By this tech\u00adnique, he can pro\u00adduce port\u00adfo\u00adlios of orig\u00adi\u00adnal prints which are in them\u00adselves works of art.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Much has changed about pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adphy since Adams did it, of course, though most\u00adly&nbsp;in the tech\u00adni\u00adcal sense. As the process of sim\u00adply mak\u00ading a pho\u00adto\u00adgraph becomes ever faster and eas\u00adi\u00ader, the dis\u00adci\u00adpline, con\u00adcen\u00adtra\u00adtion, and appetite for rig\u00ador of a pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adph\u00ader like Adams, whose \u201cstan\u00addards are as high as those of an archi\u00adtect or an engi\u00adneer,\u201d become ever rar\u00ader and more valu\u00adable.
