Drum\u00admers like Hal Blaine (\u201cwho jus\u00adti\u00adfi\u00adably calls him\u00adself \u201910 of Your Favorite Drum\u00admers\u2019 on his Web site\u201d) and gui\u00adtarists like Tom\u00admy Tedesco and Car\u00adol Kaye could play any\u00adthing put in front of them per\u00adfect\u00adly, in one take, with the style and per\u00adfect tim\u00ading that char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adize the absolute best rock, folk, pop, and soul of the 1960s.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oc-video-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"oc-video-container\">\n\t<span class=\"youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"505\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jSoPeZMHMf4?wmode=transparent&amp;fs=1&amp;hl=en&amp;showsearch=0&amp;rel=0&amp;theme=dark\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n<p>\t<!-- \/oc-video-embed -->\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!-- \/oc-video-wrapper --><\/p>\n<p>With some excep\u00adtions, this group kept a low pro\u00adfile and have only become known in sub\u00adse\u00adquent ret\u00adro\u00adspec\u00adtives that reveal just how much they con\u00adtributed to the music of the era. The answer is: more than any\u00adone sure\u00adly sus\u00adpect\u00aded at the time. But \u201cthe Wreck\u00ading Crew was not sup\u00adposed to attract atten\u00adtion. Groups like the Beach Boys, the Byrds, the Mon\u00adkees and many oth\u00aders didn\u2019t care to point out why they sound\u00aded so much bet\u00adter on records than on the road.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"oc-video-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"oc-video-container\">\n\t<span class=\"youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"505\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sWGh92O9kxU?wmode=transparent&amp;fs=1&amp;hl=en&amp;showsearch=0&amp;rel=0&amp;theme=dark\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n<p>\t<!-- \/oc-video-embed -->\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!-- \/oc-video-wrapper --><\/p>\n<p>Not only did mem\u00adbers of the Crew \u201cwork mir\u00ada\u00adcles,\u201d play\u00ading a \u201cfirst-take, no-glitch ver\u00adsion of \u2018The Lit\u00adtle Old Lady From Pasade\u00adna,\u2019\u201d for exam\u00adple, but in many cas\u00ades, they com\u00adposed icon\u00adic parts with\u00adout which songs like \u201cThe Beat Goes On\u201d or \u201cThese Boots Were Made For Walk\u00ading\u201d would prob\u00ada\u00adbly not have become hits.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oc-center-da\">\n<div data-fuse=\"22871471544\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>\u201cNine times out of ten the pro\u00adduc\u00ader or arranger would tell us to use the charts as a guide, that\u2019s all,\u201d Blaine remem\u00adbered. \u201cWe were encour\u00adaged to go for it, to go beyond what had been writ\u00adten. We had the oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty to cre\u00adate, to be a team of arrangers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though most\u00adly unknown to lis\u00adten\u00aders, the cou\u00adple dozen or so musi\u00adcians in this group of excep\u00adtion\u00adal per\u00adform\u00aders did pro\u00adduce two major stars, Leon Rus\u00adsell and Glen Camp\u00adbell, who toured with the Beach Boys in the mid-60s until he became a major super\u00adstar with the Jim\u00admy Webb-penned songs \u201cBy the Time I Get to Phoenix\u201d and \u201cWichi\u00adta Line\u00adman,\u201d both record\u00aded, of course, with mem\u00adbers of the Crew. They played on jazz records and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.udiscovermusic.com\/stories\/the-wrecking-crew-musicians-history\/\">record\u00aded icon\u00adic TV theme songs<\/a> like <em>The Twi\u00adlight Zone, Green Acres, Bonan\u00adza, M*A*S*H*, Bat\u00adman, Mis\u00adsion: Impos\u00adsi\u00adble<\/em>, and <em>Hawaii Five\u2011O<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oc-video-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"oc-video-container\">\n\t<span class=\"youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"505\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AxSarBcsKLU?wmode=transparent&amp;fs=1&amp;hl=en&amp;showsearch=0&amp;rel=0&amp;theme=dark\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n<p>\t<!-- \/oc-video-embed -->\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!-- \/oc-video-wrapper --><\/p>\n<p>The only female mem\u00adber of the Crew, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openculture.com\/2018\/08\/carol-kaye-become-prolific-session-musician-history.html\">Car\u00adol Kaye<\/a>, was described as \u201cthe great\u00adest bass play\u00ader I\u2019ve ever met,\u201d by no less than Bri\u00adan Wil\u00adson.
