Pri\u00ador to this find, the title of the old\u00adest known Dick\u00adens film belonged to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=O9Mk-B7MKP8\">Scrooge, or, Marley\u2019s Ghost<\/a><\/em>, which pre\u00admiered in Novem\u00adber 1901.<\/p>\n<p>Pro\u00advid\u00ading more con\u00adtext for the film, the BFI writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This trag\u00adic short film is based on the stage pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of Poor Jo the Cross\u00ading Sweep\u00ader, which itself adapt\u00aded one of the most affect\u00ading sto\u00adries in Dick\u00adens\u2019 epic nov\u00adel Bleak House. This short film is very much an adap\u00adta\u00adtion of the stage ver\u00adsion, in which a fol\u00adlow-spot recre\u00adat\u00aded the night watch\u00adman\u2019s lamp. As Joe dies, nev\u00ader hav\u00ading been taught to pray, the light also rep\u00adre\u00adsents the redemp\u00adtive light of heav\u00aden.<\/p>\n<p>The char\u00adac\u00adter of Joe was pop\u00adu\u00adlarised in the 19th cen\u00adtu\u00adry by actress Jen\u00adnie Lee, who toured her per\u00adfor\u00admance around Europe and the USA. Here Joe is played by Lau\u00adra Bay\u00adley and the Night-watch\u00adman by Tom Green.
