But beyond the book\u2019s abil\u00adi\u00adty to com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adcate broad themes of per\u00adse\u00adver\u00adance, courage, and loss, it has an appeal that also reach\u00ades old, wiz\u00adened men like Hemingway\u2019s San\u00adti\u00ada\u00adgo and young, imag\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtive boy\u00adish appren\u00adtices like his Mano\u00adlin. The 1952 novel\u00adla rein\u00advig\u00ado\u00adrat\u00aded Hemingway\u2019s career, won him a Pulitzer Prize, and even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly con\u00adtributed to his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/literature\/1954\/summary\/\">Nobel win<\/a> in 1954. And luck\u00adi\u00adly for all those high school Eng\u00adlish stu\u00addents, Hemingway\u2019s sto\u00adry has lent itself to some wor\u00adthy screen adap\u00adta\u00adtions, includ\u00ading the 1958 film star\u00adring Spencer Tra\u00adcy as the inde\u00adfati\u00adga\u00adble Span\u00adish-Cuban fish\u00ader\u00adman and a 1990 ver\u00adsion with the mighty Antho\u00adny Quinn in the role.<\/p>\n<p>One adap\u00adta\u00adtion that read\u00aders of Hem\u00ading\u00adway might miss is the ani\u00adma\u00adtion above, a co-pro\u00adduc\u00adtion with Cana\u00addi\u00adan, Russ\u00adian, and Japan\u00adese stu\u00addios cre\u00adat\u00aded by Russ\u00adian ani\u00adma\u00adtor Alek\u00adsander Petrov. Win\u00adner of a 2000 Acad\u00ade\u00admy Award for ani\u00admat\u00aded short, the film has as much appeal to a range of view\u00aders young and old as Hemingway\u2019s book, and for some of the same reasons\u2014it\u2019s cap\u00adti\u00advat\u00ading\u00adly vivid depic\u00adtion of life on the sea, with its long peri\u00adods of inac\u00adtiv\u00adi\u00adty and short bursts of extreme phys\u00adi\u00adcal exer\u00adtion and con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00adable risk.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oc-center-da\">\n<div data-fuse=\"22871471544\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>Both states pro\u00advide ample oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adties for com\u00adplex char\u00adac\u00adter devel\u00adop\u00adment and rich sto\u00adry\u00adtelling as well as excit\u00ading white-knuck\u00adle sus\u00adpense. Petro\u00adv\u2019s film illus\u00adtrates them all, open\u00ading with images of San\u00adti\u00adago\u2019s sto\u00adries of his sea\u00adfar\u00ading boy\u00adhood off the coast of Africa and stag\u00ading the dra\u00admat\u00adic con\u00adtests between San\u00adti\u00ada\u00adgo, his \u201cbroth\u00ader\u201d the mar\u00adlin, and the sharks who devour his prize.<\/p>\n<p>But the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion here, unlike Hemingway\u2019s spare prose, makes a daz\u00adzling dis\u00adplay of its tech\u00adnique. For his <i>The Old Man and the Sea<\/i>, Petrov\u2014only one of a hand\u00adful of ani\u00adma\u00adtors skilled in this art\u2014handpainted over 29,000 frames on glass (with help from his son, Dmitri) using slow-dry\u00ading oils. Petrov moved the paint with his fin\u00adgers to cap\u00adture the move\u00adment in the next shot, and while the mag\u00adi\u00adcal effect resem\u00adbles a mov\u00ading paint\u00ading, the shoot\u00ading itself was very tech\u00adno\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly advanced, involv\u00ading a spe\u00adcial\u00adly con\u00adstruct\u00aded motion-cap\u00adture cam\u00adera. Petrov and son began their paint\u00ading in 1997 and fin\u00adished two years lat\u00ader, tak\u00ading to heart some of the lessons of the book, it seems. The film\u2019s cre\u00adators, how\u00adev\u00ader, fared bet\u00adter than&nbsp;<i>The Old Man<\/i>\u2019s pro\u00adtag\u00ado\u00adnist, rich\u00adly reward\u00aded for their strug\u00adgle.
