Europe\u2019s grow\u00ading trep\u00adi\u00adda\u00adtion fos\u00adtered some of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century\u2019s most strik\u00ading painter\u00adly, lit\u00ader\u00adary, and cin\u00ade\u00admat\u00adic depic\u00adtions of the total\u00adi\u00adtar\u00adi\u00adan\u00adism that would soon fol\u00adlow. It was almost inevitable that this peri\u00adod would see the birth of the first deeply philo\u00adsoph\u00adi\u00adcal ani\u00admat\u00aded film, known as <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=w4IMPlVlHDM\">The Idea<\/a>.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>The Idea <\/i>first emerged as a <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2zwLB5w\">word\u00adless nov\u00adel<\/a> in 1920, drawn by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frans_Masereel\">Frans Masereel<\/a>. Masereel, a close friend of Dadaist and New Objec\u00adtivist artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/art\/artists\/george-grosz-1223\">George Grosz<\/a>, had cre\u00adat\u00aded <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2zwLB5w\">a stark, black-and-white sto\u00adry<\/a> about the indomitable nature of ideas. Employ\u00ading thick, aggres\u00adsive lines obtained through wood\u00adcut print\u00ading, Masereel depict\u00aded a con\u00adser\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive polit\u00adi\u00adcal order\u2019s fight against the birth of a new idea, which even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly flour\u00adished in spite of the establishment\u2019s relent\u00adless attempts to sup\u00adpress it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oc-center-da\">\n<div data-fuse=\"22871471544\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>Set\u00adting to work in 1930, a Czech film\u00admak\u00ader named <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Berthold_Bartosch\">Berthold Bar\u00adtosch<\/a> spent two years ani\u00admat\u00ading <i>The Idea<\/i>. Bartosch\u2019s visu\u00adal style remained true to Masereel\u2019s harsh, vivid lines. His ver\u00adsion of the sto\u00adry, how\u00adev\u00ader, took a decid\u00aded\u00adly bleak\u00ader turn\u2014one that was more rem\u00adi\u00adnis\u00adcent of the writ\u00adings of his com\u00adpa\u00adtri\u00adot, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openculture.com\/2016\/04\/franz-kafka-an-animated-introduction-to-his-literary-genius.html\">Franz Kaf\u00adka<\/a>.
