Only a hard\u00adened con\u00adtrar\u00adi\u00adan could down\u00adplay his impor\u00adtance as a chron\u00adi\u00adcler of the col\u00adlapse of six\u00adties-style utopi\u00adanism in Amer\u00adi\u00adca. Few read\u00aders could for\u00adget \u2014 or refrain from com\u00admit\u00adting to mem\u00ado\u00adry \u2014 the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fear_and_Loathing_in_Las_Vegas#The_.22wave_speech.22\">famous pas\u00adsage<\/a> of Thomp\u00adson\u2019s jour\u00adnal\u00adis\u00adtic and psy\u00adche\u00addel\u00adic nov\u00adel <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0679602984?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=openculture-20&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creativeASIN=0679602984\"><em>Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas<\/em><\/a><\/em> (1971) that looks back on the ruins of hip\u00adpiedom from with\u00adin the hang\u00adover of the ear\u00adly sev\u00aden\u00adties. With unmatched clar\u00adi\u00adty, he traces how \u201cthe ener\u00adgy of a whole gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion comes to a head in a long fine flash,\u201d the \u201csense of inevitable vic\u00adto\u00adry over the forces of Old and Evil,\u201d the feel\u00ading of \u201crid\u00ading the crest of a high and beau\u00adti\u00adful wave,\u201d and how, \u201cless than five years lat\u00ader, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost <em>see<\/em> the high-water mark \u2014 that place where the wave final\u00adly broke and rolled back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the sev\u00aden\u00adties, Thomp\u00adson count\u00aded among his friends San Fran\u00adcis\u00adco pornog\u00adra\u00adphers the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mitchell_brothers\">Mitchell broth\u00aders<\/a>, best known for pro\u00adduc\u00ading <em>Behind the Green Door<\/em>, which hit the zeit\u00adgeist the year after <em>Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas<\/em>. In 1988, the Mitchell broth\u00aders grabbed their cam\u00aderas and fol\u00adlowed Thomp\u00adson around on a lec\u00adture tour, to places like the Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Kansas and Port\u00adland, Ore\u00adgon\u2019s First Con\u00adgre\u00adga\u00adtion\u00adal Church, col\u00adlect\u00ading mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal for what would become the half-hour doc\u00adu\u00admen\u00adtary <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yq1QhZ-Ecaw\"><em>The Crazy Nev\u00ader Die<\/em><\/a>.&nbsp;It fol\u00adlows from the title that, since the news of Thomp\u00adson\u2019s hav\u00ading removed him\u00adself from this mor\u00adtal coil broke sev\u00aden years ago last week, he either&nbsp;did not die, or was not crazy. Though the lat\u00adter pos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty seems more plau\u00adsi\u00adble on its face, those famil\u00adiar with the trap\u00adpings of Thomp\u00adson\u2019s pub\u00adlic per\u00adsona \u2014 the \u201cfor\u00adti\u00adfied com\u00adpound,\u201d the rounds unloaded into the type\u00adwriter, the pea\u00adcocks \u2014 may find the for\u00admer eas\u00adi\u00ader to swal\u00adlow. Just look at the footage cut between the lec\u00adture seg\u00adments: Thomp\u00adson spray\u00ading a makeshift aerosol flamethrow\u00ader, Thomp\u00adson light\u00ading a can\u00adnon, Thomp\u00adson vicious\u00adly attack\u00ading the cam\u00adera with a Mex\u00adi\u00adcan restau\u00adrant-nap\u00adkin \u2014 all rigid\u00adly in line with his man-out-of-con\u00adtrol image.<\/p>\n<p>Wit\u00adness to the end of the Age of Aquar\u00adius, drug-fueled bon viveur, sociopo\u00adlit\u00adi\u00adcal crit\u00adic, flail\u00ading mani\u00adac: Thomp\u00adson con\u00adtained mul\u00adti\u00adtudes. His <em><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/ySiuDc\">Fear and Loathing on the Cam\u00adpaign Trail \u201972<\/a><\/em> remains one of the most inci\u00adsive texts I\u2019ve read on the Demo\u00adc\u00adra\u00adt\u00adic par\u00adty \u2014 more so than any\u00adthing polit\u00adi\u00adcal sci\u00adence class\u00ades assigned me \u2014 but over the fol\u00adlow\u00ading decades his polit\u00adi\u00adcal posi\u00adtions cur\u00addled into a sad sort of para\u00adnoia. <em>The Crazy Nev\u00ader Die<\/em> cap\u00adtures Thomp\u00adson in full gad\u00adfly mode, pack\u00ading hous\u00ades and eas\u00adi\u00adly enter\u00adtain\u00ading them, whether on time or (more com\u00admon\u00adly) not. But the con\u00adtent of these talks, assum\u00ading you can fol\u00adlow it, seems alto\u00adgeth\u00ader less rel\u00ade\u00advant to the man\u2019s endur\u00ading appeal than the life and sen\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty that pro\u00adduced it. He takes the usu\u00adal crowd-pleas\u00ading swipes at Nixon and Rea\u00adgan, but then delves hap\u00adhaz\u00adard\u00adly into elab\u00ado\u00adrate the\u00adses involv\u00ading Oliv\u00ader North, George H.W. Bush, and Iran. (1988, recall.) He takes par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar excep\u00adtion to Ed Meese, a name I imag\u00adine very few of Thomp\u00adson\u2019s younger fans rec\u00adog\u00adnize.
