His 1902 short&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.org\/details\/Levoyagedanslalune\"><em>A Trip to the Moon<\/em><\/a>, at the top, which some cin\u00ade\u00adma schol\u00adars cite as the pic\u00adture where spe\u00adcial effects as we know them began,<em>&nbsp;<\/em>has&nbsp;a par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly impor\u00adtant place in cin\u00ade\u00adma his\u00adto\u00adry. Nobody who watch\u00ades that four\u00adteen-minute pro\u00adduc\u00adtion ever for\u00adgets&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Le_Voyage_dans_la_lune.jpg\">the image of the moon\u2019s con\u00adster\u00adna\u00adtion<\/a> after the pro\u00adtag\u00ado\u00adnists\u2019 space\u00adcraft crash\u00ades into it. And the rest of the movie, if nar\u00adra\u00adtive\u00adly shaky, still has an impres\u00adsive visu\u00adal pow\u00ader. If any\u00adbody had both suf\u00adfi\u00adcient imag\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion and suf\u00adfi\u00adcient know-how to com\u00admit such a voy\u00adage to that cut\u00adting-edge medi\u00adum known as motion film over a cen\u00adtu\u00adry ago, the the\u00adater own\u00ader and sea\u00adsoned illu\u00adsion\u00adist&nbsp;M\u00e9li\u00e8s did. Charged by the cin\u00ade\u00admat\u00adic pio\u00adneer\u00ading of his coun\u00adtry\u00admen the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Auguste_and_Louis_Lumi%C3%A8re\">Lumi\u00e8re broth\u00aders<\/a>, he&nbsp;began doing it in 1896, and con\u00adtin\u00adued until 1913, which makes&nbsp;<em>A Trip to the Moon<\/em> a mid-career high\u00adlight.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oc-center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/embed\/The_Impossible_Voyage\" width=\"640\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>A mid-career high\u00adlight, that is, along\u00adside 1904\u2019s&nbsp;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/archive.org\/details\/The_Impossible_Voyage\">The Impos\u00adsi\u00adble Voy\u00adage<\/a>&nbsp;(<\/em>just above), which con\u00adtin\u00adues in the same vein of Jules Verne-style fan\u00adtas\u00adti\u00adcal sci\u00adence fic\u00adtion. This time, in fact,&nbsp;M\u00e9li\u00e8s took not just the sen\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty from Verne but, in part, a sto\u00adry, draw\u00ading inspi\u00adra\u00adtion from Verne\u2019s play<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Journey-Through-Impossible-Jules-Verne\/dp\/1591020794\"> Jour\u00adney Through the Impos\u00adsi\u00adble<\/a>&nbsp;<\/em>about a young Dan\u00adish baron tempt\u00aded to trav\u00adel to far-off lands, plan\u00adets, and real\u00adi\u00adties.
