Most read\u00aders know Hunter S. Thomp\u00adson for his 1971 book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Sav\u00adage Jour\u00adney to the Heart of the Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Dream<\/em><\/a>. But in over 45 years of writ\u00ading, this pro\u00adlif\u00adic observ\u00ader of the Amer\u00adi\u00adcan scene wrote volu\u00admi\u00adnous\u00adly, often hilar\u00adi\u00adous\u00adly, and usu\u00adal\u00adly with decep\u00adtive\u00adly clear-eyed vit\u00adri\u00adol on sports, pol\u00adi\u00adtics, media, and oth\u00ader vicious\u00adly addic\u00adtive pur\u00adsuits. (\u201cI hate to advo\u00adcate drugs, alco\u00adhol, vio\u00adlence, or insan\u00adi\u00adty to any\u00adone,\u201d he famous\u00adly said, \u201cbut they\u2019ve always worked for me.\u201d) His dis\u00adtinc\u00adtive style, often imi\u00adtat\u00aded but nev\u00ader repli\u00adcat\u00aded, all but forced the coin\u00ading of the term \u201cgonzo\u201d jour\u00adnal\u00adism. But what could define it? One clue comes in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas<\/em> itself, when Thomp\u00adson reflects on his expe\u00adri\u00adence in the city, osten\u00adsi\u00adbly as a reporter: \u201cWhat was<\/i> the sto\u00adry? Nobody had both\u00adered to say. So we would have to drum it up on our own. Free Enter\u00adprise. The Amer\u00adi\u00adcan Dream. Hor\u00ada\u00adtio Alger gone mad on drugs in Las Vegas. Do it now<\/i>: pure Gonzo jour\u00adnal\u00adism.\u201d<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll find out more in the Paris Review<\/em>\u2019s inter\u00adview with Thomp\u00adson<\/a>, in which he recounts once feel\u00ading that \u201cjour\u00adnal\u00adism was just a tick\u00adet to ride out, that I was basi\u00adcal\u00adly meant for high\u00ader things. Nov\u00adels.\u201d Sit\u00adting down to begin his prop\u00ader lit\u00ader\u00adary career, Thomp\u00adson took a quick job writ\u00ading up the Hel\u00adl\u2019s Angels<\/a>, which let him get over \u201cthe idea that jour\u00adnal\u00adism was a low\u00ader call\u00ading. Jour\u00adnal\u00adism is fun because it offers imme\u00addi\u00adate work. You get hired and at least you can cov\u00ader the f&cking City Hall. It\u2019s excit\u00ading.\u201d And then came the real epiphany, after he went to cov\u00ader the Ken\u00adtucky Der\u00adby for Scan\u00adlan<\/em>\u2019s: \u201cMost depress\u00ading days of my life. I\u2019d lie in my tub at the Roy\u00adal\u00adton. I thought I had failed com\u00adplete\u00adly as a jour\u00adnal\u00adist. Final\u00adly, in des\u00adper\u00ada\u00adtion and embar\u00adrass\u00adment, I began to rip the pages out of my note\u00adbook and give them to a copy\u00adboy to take to a fax machine down the street. When I left I was a bro\u00adken man, failed total\u00adly, and con\u00advinced I\u2019d be exposed when the stuff came out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Indeed, the expo\u00adsure came, but not in the way he expect\u00aded. Below, we\u2019ve col\u00adlect\u00aded ten of Thomp\u00adson\u2019s arti\u00adcles freely avail\u00adable online, from those ear\u00adly pieces on the Hel\u00adl\u2019s Angels and the Ken\u00adtucky Der\u00adby to oth\u00aders on the 1972 Pres\u00adi\u00adden\u00adtial race, the Hon\u00adolu\u00adlu Marathon, Richard Nixon, and wee-hour con\u00adver\u00adsa\u00adtions with Bill Mur\u00adray. But don\u2019t take these sub\u00adjects too lit\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly; Thomp\u00adson always had a way of find\u00ading some\u00adthing even more inter\u00adest\u00ading in exact\u00adly the oppo\u00adsite direc\u00adtion from what\u00adev\u00ader he\u2019d ini\u00adtial\u00adly meant to write about. And that, per\u00adhaps, reveals more about the gonzo method than any\u00adthing else.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Motor\u00adcy\u00adcle Gangs: Losers and Out\u00adsiders<\/a>\u201d (The Nation<\/em>, 1965) The arti\u00adcle that would become the basis for Thomp\u00adson\u2019s first book, Hel\u00adl\u2019s Angels: The Strange and Ter\u00adri\u00adble Saga of the Out\u00adlaw Motor\u00adcy\u00adcle Gangs<\/em><\/a>. \u201cWhen you get in an argu\u00adment with a group of out\u00adlaw motor\u00adcy\u00adclists, you can gen\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly count your chances of emerg\u00ading unmaimed by the num\u00adber of heavy-hand\u00aded allies you can muster in the time it takes to smash a beer bot\u00adtle. In this league, sports\u00adman\u00adship is for old lib\u00ader\u00adals and young fools.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas<\/a> (Rolling Stone, 1971) The Gonzo jour\u00adnal\u00adism clas\u00adsic first appeared as a two-part series in Rolling Stone<\/em> mag\u00ada\u00adzine in Novem\u00adber 1971, com\u00adplete with illus\u00adtra\u00adtions from Ralph Stead\u00adman<\/a>, before being pub\u00adlished as a book in 1972.  Rolling Stone<\/em> has post\u00aded the orig\u00adi\u00adnal ver\u00adsion on its web site<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cFear and Loathing on the Cam\u00adpaign Trail in \u201972<\/a>\u2033 (Rolling Stone<\/em>, 1973) Excerpts from Thomp\u00adson\u2019s book of near\u00adly the same name, an exam\u00adi\u00adna\u00adtion of Demo\u00adc\u00adra\u00adt\u00adic Par\u00adty can\u00addi\u00addate George McGov\u00adern\u2019s unsuc\u00adcess\u00adful bid for the Pres\u00adi\u00adden\u00adcy that McGov\u00adern\u2019s cam\u00adpaign man\u00adag\u00ader Frank Mankiewicz called \u201cthe least fac\u00adtu\u00adal, most accu\u00adrate account\u201d in print. \u201cMy own the\u00ado\u00adry, which sounds like mad\u00adness, is that McGov\u00adern would have been bet\u00adter off run\u00adning against Nixon with the same kind of neo-\u2018radical\u2019 cam\u00adpaign he ran in the pri\u00admaries. Not rad\u00adi\u00adcal in the left\/right sense, but rad\u00adi\u00adcal in a sense that he was com\u00ading on with a new\u2026 a dif\u00adfer\u00adent type of politi\u00adcian\u2026 a per\u00adson who actu\u00adal\u00adly would grab the sys\u00adtem by the ears and shake it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Curse of Lono<\/a>\u201d (Play\u00adboy<\/em>, 1983) Thomp\u00adson and Stead\u00adman\u2019s assign\u00adment from Run\u00adning <\/em>mag\u00ada\u00adzine to cov\u00ader the Hon\u00adololu marathon turns into a char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adis\u00adti\u00adcal\u00adly \u201cter\u00adri\u00adble mis\u00adad\u00adven\u00adture,\u201d this one even involv\u00ading the old Hawai\u00adian gods. \u201cIt was not easy for me, either, to accept the fact that I was born 1700 years ago in an ocean-going canoe some\u00adwhere off the Kona Coast of Hawaii, a prince of roy\u00adal Poly\u00adne\u00adsian blood, and lived my first life as King Lono, ruler of all the islands, god of excess, unde\u00adfeat\u00aded box\u00ader. How\u2019s that for roots?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe Was a Crook<\/a>\u201d (Rolling Stone<\/em>, 1994) Thomp\u00adson\u2019s obit\u00adu\u00adary of, and per\u00adson\u00adal his\u00adto\u00adry of his hatred for, Pres\u00adi\u00addent Richard M. Nixon. \u201cSome peo\u00adple will say that words like scum<\/i> and rot\u00adten<\/i> are wrong for Objec\u00adtive Jour\u00adnal\u00adism \u2014 which is true, but they miss the point. It was the built-in blind spots of the Objec\u00adtive rules and dog\u00adma that allowed Nixon to slith\u00ader into the White House in the first place.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoomed Love at the Taco Stand<\/a>\u201d (Time<\/em>, 2001) Thomp\u00adson\u2019s adven\u00adtures in Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia, to which he has returned for the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of Ter\u00adry Gilliam\u2019s film adap\u00adta\u00adtion of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas <\/em>star\u00adring John\u00adny Depp. \u201cI had to set\u00adtle for half of Dep\u00adp\u2019s trail\u00ader, along with his C4 Porsche and his wig, so I could look more like myself when I drove around Bev\u00ader\u00adly Hills and stared at peo\u00adple when we rolled to a halt at stop\u00adlights on Rodeo Dri\u00adve.\u201d<\/p>\n
