Ceylon Today is a Sri Lankan English-language newspaper and digital news publication published by Ceylon Newspapers (Private) Limited. It was established in 2011 and is based in Colombo. Its sister newspaper is Mawbima. Ceylon Newspapers (Private) Limited is owned by Tiran Alles.[1]
The first edition of Ceylon Today was published on 18 November 2011.[2]
History
[edit]Ceylon Today was launched in November 2011 as an English-language daily newspaper. It was published by Ceylon Newspapers (Private) Limited, which also publishes the Sinhala-language newspaper Mawbima.
In June 2012, editor-in-chief Lalith Alahakoon was removed from his position.[3]
He was succeeded by Hana Ibrahim, a former treasurer of the Free Media Movement.[4]
Ibrahim subsequently resigned from the Free Media Movement.[5]
Transition in print and digital publishing
[edit]In March 2026, Ceylon Today ended its daily print edition as part of a transition toward digital news publishing. The final daily print edition was published on 4 March 2026.[6]
The publication stated that the decision reflected changes in the newspaper industry, including changes in technology, patterns of news consumption, social media and the economics of print. It said that the publication would continue its journalism through digital platforms.[7]
The Sunday print edition continued after the end of the daily edition. A 15 March 2026 edition of Ceylon Today was published as a Sunday print newspaper.[8]
The change resulted in Ceylon Today operating through a combination of its digital publication and continued Sunday print edition, rather than as a daily print newspaper.[9]
Ownership and publishing
[edit]Ceylon Newspapers (Private) Limited publishes Ceylon Today and Mawbima. The company is associated with Tiran Alles, who is identified as its owner in contemporary reporting.[10]
The Media Ownership Monitor's research on Sri Lanka identified Ceylon Newspapers (Pvt) Limited as the publisher of Ceylon Today and Mawbima and documented the ownership structure associated with the Alles family.[11]
