Orders[1]

Coriobacteriia is a class of Gram-positive bacteria in the phylum Actinomycetota.[1] Most characterized members are non-spore-forming obligate or facultative anaerobes.[2][3] Members have been isolated from animal gastrointestinal tracts and human oral, intestinal, and genital sites, while the order Anaerosomatales contains environmental organisms isolated from subsurface habitats.[2][3]

Some human-associated species are opportunistic pathogens. For example, Eggerthella lenta can cause invasive infections, including bloodstream infections.[4]

Taxonomy

[edit]

Early classifications placed the described members of Coriobacteriia in a single order, Coriobacteriales, and a single family, Coriobacteriaceae. Comparative analyses of 16S rRNA genes and protein sequences subsequently supported separating Eggerthellales, containing Eggerthellaceae, from an emended Coriobacteriales containing Coriobacteriaceae and Atopobiaceae.[5]

Anaerosomatales was established for cultivated representatives of the formerly uncultured OPB41 lineage.[3] The family Kribbibacteriaceae was later established within Coriobacteriales on the basis of phenotypic, 16S rRNA gene, and multilocus sequence analyses.[6] The List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature recognizes three orders in the class: Anaerosomatales, Coriobacteriales, and Eggerthellales.[1]

Molecular signatures

[edit]

An analysis of 22 genomes then available for Coriobacteriia identified 66 conserved signature indels associated with clades at several taxonomic levels. Of these, 24 were shared by all sampled members of the class, and one additional indel was shared with other sampled Actinomycetota. The analysis also identified separate sets of indels associated with the saccharolytic and asaccharolytic clades that supported the division into Coriobacteriales and Eggerthellales.[5] This analysis predated the establishment of Anaerosomatales and Kribbibacteriaceae.

Phylogeny

[edit]

Nomenclature and the taxon labels in the tree follow LPSN.[1] The simplified phylogenomic tree below shows the relationships among the type species of the type genera of the five LPSN-recognized families. Its branching topology is based on the 120-marker-protein tree from GTDB release R11-RS232.[7][8] GTDB itself places Eggerthellaceae within Coriobacteriales rather than recognizing Eggerthellales, and places Kribbibacterium absianum, the type species of the type genus of Kribbibacteriaceae, within its Atopobiaceae clade.
