Matt Singer (born December 23, 1980) is a American film critic and editor.

Early life

Matt Singer was born on December 23, 1980 in Neptune, New Jersey.[1] He grew up in central New Jersey in the town of Marlboro.[2] He was raised Jewish.[3]

Career

From 2005 to 2010, Singer worked as a freelance writer, film critic, and later anchor for IFC News.[4] In July 2013, Singer joined The Dissolve, a film publication site operated by Pitchfork, as an editor.[5][6] In May 2015, he left the site prior to its defunction in July of that year.[7][8] Since November 2015, he has served as a film critic and editor for the website Screen Crush.[9] In addition, his writing has appeared in various outlets such as The Village Voice, Time Out Chicago, and The Rumpus among others.[10] He is a member of the New York Film Critics Circle.[11]

Film and television appearances

Singer is a frequent contributor to CBS This Morning Saturday in which he appeared regularly to provide film criticism on current releases and to provide commentary on industry. In 2011, he contributed to Ebert Presents: At the Movies in which he offered insights on film reviews in the tradition of film critic Roger Ebert.

In 2018, appeared as an expert on James Cameron's Story of Science Fiction, discussing the impact of the science fiction genre across film. In addition, he was also featured in the 2016 television series Trulnside, which examined behind-the-scenes aspects of popular movies, and in the 2007 film Indie Sex, which explored themes of sexuality in independent film.[12][13]

Podcast appearances

In 2012, he began serving as co-host of Filmspotting: Streaming Video Unit alongside Alison Wilmore.[14] The series, which aired bi-weekly, focused on movies and content available on streaming.[15] The series aired for 168 episodes for over six years before going on hiatus in 2018.[16] The series resumed after an eight years hiatus in 2026, with Jordan Hoffman as the new co-host and airing twice a week.[17]

In addition to Filmspotting, Singer has made numerous guest appearances on various podcasts to discuss film critcism, comics, and broader cultural topics. Notable podcasts where he has discussed film and related subjects include The Flop House in 2021 where he joined for an episode discussing the 1994 film North,[18] Blank Check with Griffin & David in 2022 for a discussion on Spider-Man,[19] and Doughboys in 2025 for a segment involving film tie-ins and its related themes.[20]

Personal life

Singer currently resides in Brooklyn, New York with his wife and two daughters.[38]
