New Alma Hospital is a private hospital in Mannarkkad, Palakkad district, Kerala, India. The hospital provides medical services in obstetrics and gynaecology and a range of other medical specialties.[1]
The institution developed from Alma Hospital, established in Mannarkkad in 1995 by Dr. K. A. Kammappa, an obstetrician and gynaecologist. It subsequently developed into New Alma Hospital as its clinical services and infrastructure expanded.[2]
History
[edit]Dr. K. A. Kammappa began private medical practice in 1992 and established Alma Hospital in Mannarkkad in 1995, according to a profile published by Madhyamam.[2]
The institution subsequently developed into New Alma Hospital as its services and facilities expanded. A 2023 profile reported that the hospital had 110 beds, 20 doctors and 225 employees at the time of publication.[2]
The hospital's infrastructure has continued to develop. A Kerala State Pollution Control Board regulatory record dated 2024 documents expansion of the hospital building and other facilities, described as expansion of a 90-bed hospital without an increase in bed strength, together with augmentation of its sewage-treatment plant.[3]
Dr. K. A. Kammappa

Dr. K. A. Kammappa is an Indian obstetrician and gynaecologist associated with New Alma Hospital. Dr. K. A. Kammappa founded Alma Hospital in Mannarkkad in 1995 and is identified as the medical director of New Alma Hospital.[2][4]
The Kerala Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology lists Dr. K. A. Kammappa as medical director and head of the gynaecology department at New Alma Hospital.[4]
Dr. K. A. Kammappa's career has been associated particularly with obstetric and maternity care. A 2023 profile published by Madhyamam reported that Dr. K. A. Kammappa had attended more than 100,000 births during his career.[2]
The Kerala Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology has also listed Dr. K. A. Kammappa as a faculty member and team leader in professional training programmes in obstetric procedures using simulation.[5]

Its current public profile lists gynaecology, orthopaedics, paediatrics, general medicine, general surgery, dermatology, otorhinolaryngology, pulmonology, psychiatry, emergency medicine, cardiology, anaesthesiology and radiology among its specialties.[1]
The hospital has continued to develop its clinical and supporting infrastructure. A 2024 Kerala State Pollution Control Board record documents expansion of the hospital building and other facilities together with augmentation of its sewage-treatment plant.[3]
The hospital provides emergency medical services, including a resuscitation area equipped for emergency care.
The hospital's operating facilities include an orthopaedic operating theatre equipped with a laminar-flow system and C-arm fluoroscopy equipment.
In 2024, Madhyamam reported that the hospital's sewage-treatment plant, with a stated treatment capacity of approximately 150,000 litres, was used to process wastewater from a municipal public toilet in Mannarkkad. Mannarkkad Municipality subsequently presented the hospital with a certificate of appreciation for the assistance.[6]
The hospital is also listed in the Kerala State Mental Health Authority's 2025 register of mental-health establishments. The register records New Alma Hospital at Perimbadari, Mannarkkad, with a consultant psychiatrist and five registered beds under registration number B/252/2025/SMHA.[7]
Medical research

A study by Devendra B. Naddoni, Seema K. Balakundi and Kammappa K. Assainar, published in the International Journal of Reproduction, Contraception, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, investigated the use of nitrous oxide and oxygen (Entonox) for pain relief during labour. The study involved 200 pregnant women treated at New Alma Hospital between March and July 2015.[8]
Another study by Devendra B. N., Seema K. B. and Kammappa K. A., published in the IOSR Journal of Dental and Medical Sciences, examined episiotomy wound haematoma and its management and healing assessment using the REEDA scale. The study was conducted at New Alma Hospital between April 2012 and April 2015 and included 12,558 deliveries.[9]
A further paper by Devendra B. N., Seema K. B. and Kammappa K. A., published in 2016, described a 10-year experience in the management of atonic postpartum haemorrhage at New Alma Hospital. The study covered April 2005 to March 2015. The authors reported 39,107 deliveries during the study period, including 10,558 Caesarean sections.[10]
Medical education and professional training
[edit]New Alma Hospital is a rotation site for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG)–Aster MedCity Obstetrics and Gynaecology Programme leading to the MRCOG qualification. The RCOG identifies Aster MedCity in Kochi as the accredited centre and New Alma Hospital as a rotation site within the programme. The programme is listed by the RCOG as having full accreditation.[11]
Dr. K. A. Kammappa has participated in professional obstetric education and training activities through the Kerala Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. A 2025 KFOG programme on training in obstetric procedures using simulation listed Dr. K. A. Kammappa as head of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department at New Alma Hospital and as a team leader.[5]
Role in Mannarkkad healthcare
[edit]New Alma Hospital has been involved in healthcare activities in Mannarkkad and the surrounding region.
In 2025, Kerala Kaumudi reported that doctors at Mannarkkad Taluk Hospital sought assistance from Dr. K. A. Kammappa during an emergency Caesarean section. Dr. K. A. Kammappa and colleagues assisted with the procedure, and the report stated that both the mother and baby survived.[12]
In March 2024, Madhyamam reported that Mannarkkad Municipality presented New Alma Hospital with a certificate of appreciation after the hospital provided sewage-treatment support for wastewater from a municipal public toilet. The report said that the hospital's treatment plant had a capacity of approximately 150,000 litres and that the facility was used to treat the municipal wastewater during the episode.[6]
