Using 10 refs for a single sentence is unacceptable levels of citation overkill and obscures anything that may actually have coverage of any significance. It is not more likely to get the article published. Less is more. I'm not really seeing anything demonstrating significant coverage though, so you'd have to let me know. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 11:51, 31 August 2026 (UTC)

Nuvemshop is a Latin American e-commerce company that operates under the Nuvemshop brand in Brazil and the Tiendanube brand in Spanish-speaking markets, providing a software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform for creating and hosting online stores. Founded in Argentina in 2011, it operates in Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Colombia and Chile and serves mainly small and medium-sized merchants.[1][2][3][4] Technology publications including TechCrunch and PYMNTS have described the company as a Latin American counterpart to Shopify.[1][5]

History

[edit]

Founding and early years (2011–2014)

[edit]

Nuvemshop was founded in 2011 in Argentina by Santiago Sosa, Alejandro Vázquez, Martín Palombo, José Abuchaem and Alejandro Alfonso, who met as students at the Instituto Tecnológico de Buenos Aires (ITBA), where Vázquez studied systems administration and the others computer engineering and computer science. They set out to build a space where people could buy and sell online with confidence.[6] The company initially operated a marketplace before shifting to a software-as-a-service model, allowing merchants to run their own branded online stores.[7][6]

In 2011 it was selected for Baitec, a business-incubation program run by the government of the city of Buenos Aires.[8] In 2012, after an angel-stage investment of US$300,000 from Kaszek Ventures, it opened an office in Brazil, where it operates as Nuvemshop.[9][10] It raised a further US$600,000 from the Brazilian fund Trindade Investimentos in 2013 and US$2.75 million in a round led by Kaszek Ventures in December 2014.[9][11]

Growth and investment (2017–2021)

[edit]

Between 2017 and 2021 the company raised four successive funding rounds. In September 2017 it announced a Series B of US$7 million, equivalent to about R$24 million at the time, led by Elevar Equity with Kaszek Ventures and Ignia Partners.[9][11]

In October 2020 it raised US$30 million co-led by Qualcomm Ventures and Kaszek Ventures, with participation from FJ Labs, IGNIA, Elevar Equity and the investor Kevin Efrusy, and opened an office in Mexico City.[2][12][10] In March 2021 it raised a Series D led by Accel, reported at US$90 million, bringing its total funding to about US$128 million; by that point TechCrunch reported the company had become profitable.[13][14][15]

In August 2021 it raised US$500 million co-led by Insight Partners and Tiger Global Management, reaching a valuation of about US$3.1 billion and making it, at the time, the fifth most valuable startup in Latin America.[16][17] Although founded in Argentina, the company has at times been presented as Brazilian in the Brazilian press, a characterisation CNN Brasil discussed explicitly when reporting the round.[18]

Product expansion and acquisitions (2022–2024)

[edit]

In May 2022 the company introduced Nuvemshop Next, a tier aimed at merchants billing between R$100,000 and R$10 million a month, with an investment of R$30 million,[19] and it later introduced Nuvem Pay, a native checkout product.[20] In November 2022 it entered Colombia with an investment reported at over R$53 million, targeting 10,000 customers in the country by 2024.[3]

The company also built out its own financial and logistics services. It introduced its payments service in Brazil as Nuvem Pago in October 2021,[21][22] began a gradual rollout under the Pago Nube brand in Argentina from late 2022,[23] and launched it in Mexico in 2025 as part of a four-product ecosystem announced with an investment of US$17.5 million.[24][25] It also introduced its logistics service in Brazil as Nuvem Envio, following its acquisition of the Brazilian logistics company Mandaê,[26][27] with launches under the Envío Nube brand in Argentina in 2024 and Mexico in 2025.[28][24] In December 2023 it acquired the marketing-automation company Perfit for an undisclosed sum; Perfit's founder, Kevin Goreglad, remained with the business after the acquisition.[29][30]

In April 2024 it expanded to Chile with a regional investment of US$10 million and a target of 15,000 small and medium-sized businesses.[4] Later that month it announced a package of technology improvements for merchants, including a point-of-sale tool to integrate online and physical sales and a R$42 million credit line offered to merchants through Nuvem Pago.[31][32][33] As of 2025 the company was listed among the largest Latin American startups by valuation.[34]

Market and competition

[edit]

Nuvemshop operates in a region where e-commerce has grown rapidly. Crunchbase News reported regional online retail sales of about US$84 billion in 2021, projected to reach US$116 billion by 2023, citing Statista,[14] and cited Statista data on regional e-commerce penetration when reporting the company's 2020 round.[12] Bloomberg cited a United Nations report on the same trend in 2021.[15] In Brazil, the company's largest market, Exame reported that e-commerce revenue reached a record R$262.7 billion in 2022, citing NielsenIQ Ebit.[29] Reporting on the company's entry into Colombia, Exame noted that online sales there grew 40 per cent in 2021, the highest level in six years, according to BlackSip and the Colombian Chamber of Electronic Commerce, and that an Inter-American Development Bank report with Finnovista placed Colombia third in the region both for fintech and for online sales, behind Brazil and Mexico.[3]

Coverage has positioned the company against two distinct sets of competitors. Brazilian outlets have named VTEX, Tray, Shopify and Wix as rivals in store-building software,[35] while its payments service has been compared to Mercado Pago[21] and AME[22] in Brazil and to Mercado Pago, PayPal and OpenPay in Mexico.[25] Exame has contrasted its merchant-owned-store model with the marketplace model of Magazine Luiza, B2W and Mercado Livre,[2] and O Globo compared its approach to the logistics strategies of Mercado Livre and Magazine Luiza.[36] TechCrunch compared the company's 2021 valuation to Shopify's market capitalisation.[17]

The company does not disclose revenue figures. Exame reported that merchants using the platform in Brazil sold R$163.5 million during the 2023 Black Friday week, about 45 per cent more than in 2022, across 2.5 million products and at an average order value of R$262.80.[29]

Products and services

[edit]

Nuvemshop's core product is a SaaS platform that lets merchants build and host an online store without in-house development, sold as a fixed monthly subscription; Exame reported plans ranging from R$29 to R$499 a month in 2017 and from R$14 to R$200 a month in 2021.[1][9][10] The company also offers payments through Nuvem Pago, shipping and logistics through Nuvem Envio, and marketing-automation tools obtained through its acquisition of Perfit, alongside third-party app integrations.[21][26][29]
