Merlin Röhl (born 5 July 2002) is a German professional footballer who plays as a right midfielder, central midfielder or right-back for Premier League club Everton.

Early life

Röhl was born and grew up in Potsdam, Germany.[1][2]

Club career

Ingolstadt

Röhl started his youth career at SV Babelsberg 03, but moved to FC Ingolstadt in 2018 having had a trial spell at the club after sharing his performance data through the app Tonsser.[3][2] He signed a long-term contract with the club in January 2020.[4]

Röhl made his debut for FC Ingolstadt on 25 November 2020, starting in a 3–1 3. Liga win away to Bayern Munich II.[2][5] He scored his first senior goal on 16 December 2020 with a right-footed volley in the 37th minute of a 1–0 league victory over Hansa Rostock.[6][7]

Freiburg

On 17 August 2022, Röhl signed with Bundesliga side SC Freiburg.[8] He initially played for the club's reserve side, SC Freiburg II, before making his Bundesliga debut as a substitute on 4 March 2023 in a 0-0 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach.[9] Röhl scored his first competitive goal for Freiburg on 9 November 2023 in a 5-0 win against FK TSC in the UEFA Europa League.[10] His first Bundesliga goal came three days later in a 3-1 defeat to RB Leipzig.[11] On 18 September 2024, Röhl signed a contract extension with the club.[12] His 2024-25 season was disrupted by multiple injury spells, before he returned to the side towards the end of the campaign.[13] Röhl made 60 competitive appearances for Freiburg, scoring three goals and providing 6 assists.[14]

Loan to Everton

Röhl moved to Premier League side Everton on a season-long loan on 1 September 2025, the last day of the summer transfer window.[15] The deal included an obligation to buy provided that Everton avoid relegation, with the reported fee being around €25 million including possible bonuses.[15] On 17 May 2026, he scored his first goal for the club in a 3–1 defeat against Sunderland.[16] Röhl made 16 Premier League appearances, starting six, with four of those starts coming in Everton's final four Premier league matches.[17]

On 1 July 2026, Röhl signed permanently with Everton after the obligation to buy in his loan agreement was triggered by the club avoiding relegation from the Premier League the previous season.[18] During pre-season, Röhl was tried in several positions, including right-back and central midfield.[19] He subsequently began the 2026-27 Premier League season at right-back for Everton.[20]

International career

Röhl has represented Germany at both under-18, under-19, under-20 and under-21 levels as well.[1]

Style of play

Often considered a tall, versatile and technically gifted midfielder, Röhl has also played at left-back and further outfield on the right wing.[21][22] His playing style and physical stature has earned him comparisons to Leon Goretzka.[23]
