Experimental duplication & critique

Need to find a balanced view of Krishna's research. So far, I found this bit:

"A short paper claiming an experimental confirmation of early Jeewanu works exists, although the issue whether the ‘microscopic objects’ were alive or not was left open (Briggs 1965). In contrast, the critique of biochemist Cyril Ponnamperuma (1923–1994), then a leading figure of NASA’s Exobiology Division, was fierce and probably influential. Together with coworker Linda Caren, he lamented the ‘confusing manner in which the experimental procedures [of the Jeewanu work in general, MG] were presented’; they questioned the sterility of the mixtures and speculated that multiplication of the particles could have resulted from mechanical breakage by shaking (Caren and Ponnamperuma 1967, quote p 3). In the same vein, the team demurred that ‘the large number of chemically undefined substances in the protenoid jeewanu experiments preclude a meaningful interpretation’ (l.c., p 4). It should be noted, however, that the paper only reviewed, compared and re-interpreted data published by Bahadur or others and did not refer to any attempt of the authors to reproduce the work. Accordingly, Caren and Ponnamperuma concluded that ‘[At] present, the nature and properties of the jeewanu remains to be clarified’ (l.c., p.4).iii "

Correction of 1964 publication details

i have disclosed on this talk page that i am the daughter of Krishna Bahadur and S Ranganayaki

I request a factual bibliographic correction to reference 16.

The citation presently credits only P. K. Varma and incorrectly uses the word “photocell”.

Please replace the existing citation with:

Existing text [Bahadur, K.; Varma, P. K. (1981). “Histochemical Study of Lipid-Like Material in Photochemically Formed Jeewanu, the Protocell, with Formaldehyde Partially Replaced by Other Organic Sources”. Journal of the British Interplanetary Society. 34: 100–102.

The original published paper identifies the authors as

[K. Bahadur and P. K. Varma. Its title uses “the Protocell”, not “the Photocell”, and the article appears on pages 100–102.]

Proposed addition concerning the 1965 Briggs experiment

I have disclosed my connection to the subject and conflict of interest disclosure.

The exact location proposed—preferably the “Scientific reviews” section.

Dr M H Briggs discribed the purpose of this paper as reporting a 'confirmation and extension 'of earlier work of Krishna bahadur and O. N. Parti . It was an external experimental study using related preprations .

Experimental Arrangements

He repeated the experiments conducted by Bahadur and team by making a series of sterilised chemical mixtures, exposing them to prolonged illumination, with two of the flasks of each mixture were maintained in darkness. The remaining mixtures were exposed to light using 500 watt lamps for four months.

sterility testing

samples were taken from the flasks using aseptic techniques for examination as required. Samples were inoculated into microbial growth media and agar slopes and incubated for weeks at 37 degree C . Briggs reported no microbial growth under the tests used.

Microscopic Observations Globular structure approximately .5 to 15 mocrometersin illuminated preparation. No Compareable microstructure in the dark control. Solitary structure and growth of structure. Apparent budding in some structures.

Chemical and activity test

Briggs Reported Amino acid in illuminated prepration. Low but repeatable esterase activity in some precipitates. Several other compounds that were tentatively identified. Phosphatase activity in others. No detected peptidase activity.

this docuemnt is an external historical replication attempt though does not conclusively proves that the structures were living . it uses the analytical methods available in 1965.
