Upton-upon-Severn → Upton upon Severn – This is the name of the settlement even though its civil parish uses hyphens. Google Maps doesn't use hyphens and neither does the town council (even though the council is more likely to use the name of the parish) since the town council is the parish's council. • Against I have a phone directory which gives postal addresses as Upton upon Severn but the associated dialling codes as Upton-upon-Severn. Some online address selectors spell it one way, some the other. My un-favourite is the web delivery form which offers Upton-upon-Severn on its drop-down list but then barfs on the hyphens as non-alphanumeric characters when I click Send. There probably are niceties between the two spellings (I remember my father arguing about it back in the 1960s), but since the article is about both the town and the parish, nobody can say that either of them is incorrect. Upton-upon-Severn → Upton upon Severn – I want to reconsider the 2019 requested move. I have gathered more data both for and against. I don't want to burden the Requested moves page, so I'll add full analysis to the Talk page. Tl;dr - the town's name, according to the majority of local references, is Upton upon Severn; its addresses are formally Upton-upon-Severn although town businesses' websites often ignore that. I believe the style currently used for its name within the town itself, almost universally, is the more appropriate page title. David Brooks (talk) 20:53, 1 December 2025 (UTC)

Having recently visited this town from my home in Upton, Massachusetts, for a specific reason, I've been bugged by the inconsistencies. I'm advocating for the title change because the local environment clearly prefers Upton upon Severn for the town name.

For municipal uses, the no-hyphen version is used by: the town council (where a signboard outside shows UPTON UPON SEVERN), the welcome signs on the A4104, the parish and Baptist churches, and the primary school, which capitalizes the "U" in its signage, although it (correctly) uses hyphens in its postal address.

The Information Center/Heritage Centre on Church Street displays UPTON UPON SEVERN on the outside. The public library has hyphens on its main page, which is curated by the Worcestershire CC, but its own Facebook page is without them.

Not strictly local, but Visit Worcestershire and Visit the Malverns have no hyphens, and the Malvern Hills District Council has pages that use no hyphens.

Checking the websites of a random selection of town businesses, eleven give their addresses as Upton upon Severn, one each as Upon, on, and On, and five as Upton-upon-Severn (although three of those five have websites controlled by a larger coporation, and only use the hyphens in an address).

Referring to the 2019 request, the civil parish is something of a red herring. The civil parish is the town council (see above) and the 2019 links go to a now defunct page of the Ordnance Survey (see below).

However, in a formal national context, we have the Royal Mail and the BT phone book, which use Upton-upon-Severn in their address listings. First Bus, which runs through the town, lists Upton-upon-Severn among its stops. On the other hand, the Ordnance Survey uses Upton upon Severn both on the maps and OS Data hub (see file SO84.csv), further reinforcing the place-name versus address dichotomy.

Finally it should be noted there are non-authoritative sites out there, many of which simply copy the title and opening paragraph of this Wikipedia page, and some local organizations (such as the Tudor House Museum and the Rugby Club) use different stylings on the same site. The Worcestershire County site does not seem to help; you can find documents with and without hyphens on its website, and I haven't found a formal list of names.

However this is resolved, I plan to add to the page a note based on the above name/address dichotomy. Currently the page doesn't even include the full non-hyphenated name. And I believe the same argument applies to the Upton-upon-Severn Memorial Hall page; see here.
