Deprecated nationality

Was going to revert this edit as I imagine it is creating a bunch of unneeded red categories. Since the parameter is deprecated across the board for all wrappers, why not just keep them all in one category? Zackmann (^{Talk to me}/_{What I been doing}) 03:22, 21 February 2026 (UTC)

@Zackmann08: I just finished creating the categories about 1 minute ago. In my experience, when a tracking category has a huge number of entries, it never gets fixed: it's too intimidating. Oh gosh, that would have been handy. I just manually added the deprecated parameter category to all 24 doc pages.

I just thought of another good reason to break these out. I want to double-check that |nationality= isn't actually used in any of the wrapper templates. Implicit parameters inherited from {{Infobox person}} are much less controversial to delete. Hey. So I know I left a detailed response on my talk page, but I wanted to come here and once again just say I'm sorry. You were very on point with your criticisms of me. I also want to genuinely thank you for the way you approached this. Other editors would not have been so kind or assumed good faith the way that you did. This AGF I DO NOT take for granted. Please know that I have heard (read?) you loud and clear and am rethinking my strategies in multiple ways moving forward.

Nationality cats

FYI, now that all the subcats you created with this edit are empty, I am going to revert it. Kudos to you for putting in the legwork to make that happen. I was initially against your idea, but it got cleaned up MUCH faster that way. So, you were right. At this point, the only cat left with more than 2 pages in it is the one for {{Infobox person}}, which we are working on emptying currently. There is still a chance that others will pop up in the coming days, so still want them to get caught by the error check, but no longer a need to have multiple categories. Happy Saturday! |nationality= is still listed as a valid parameter in infobox documentation (e.g., Template:Infobox economist/doc). Before you remove the deprecated parameter sub-categories, you may wish to update the documentation pages to make sure good-faith edits don't produce mysterious errors. Crap! Good point!! I will update the relevant documentation pages right now. To be clear, the deprecation is still working. It is just putting them all in 1 category instead of numerous subcategories. Easier to maintain and clean up at this point. But VERY good catch about the documentation! Ran another check on all he relevant doc pages for the templates with cats in Category:Deprecated parameters and Economist and Philosopher were the only 2 still with the nationality param. Officeholder still has it but that is a separate project, not a {{Infobox person}} wrapper. Working on removing it there as well in a separate project. Break time but back later! Change to section headings

In Strand swamp, you changed the section headings at the end of the article with the edit summary "use more standard ref section headers". Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Layout states, "Heading names: Editors may use any reasonable section and subsection names that they choose." I use "Notes" for explanatory notes, if they are present, containing the {{notelist}} template, "References" for in-line citations, containing the {{reflist}} template, and "Sources", or, very recently, "Cited sources", for full citations (I see that I made a typo in Strand swamp, leaving out the 'd'). I have used that pattern for many years, in part because it aligns with the names of the templates, and I see it used in many other articles. I object to the characterization that is less "standard" than other variants. Donald Albury 01:55, 23 June 2026 (UTC)

I was confused by "Cite sources", and I don't recall seeing "Cited sources". "Cited sources" isn't listed at MOS:NOTES, although "Works cited" is noted. Instead of "cite sources", I went with the most common pair "Notes" and "References", per MOS:NOTES. I'd suggest you do some researching on the topics you're tagging before adding {{notability}}. There is information available beyond coordinates and statistics for all of the Canadian cinder cones that have articles you tagged. You seem to be tagging them just because they are stubs. I wanted to tag the articles to encourage editors (such as yourself) to find more than an entry at Bivouac or BC Geographical Names or Catalogue of Canadian volcanoes. I'm happy to remove any of the tags if we can find information beyond simple statistics.

If you are very confident that such information is available, could you please supply non-statistical information for these articles, with citations to reliable sources? Can you check something? this edit of yours appears to have caused some convert errors. I THINK that the errors are actually because the values supplied on those pages are just bad values... Also, I know I pinged you on Template talk:Infobox UNESCO World Heritage Site, but if you have a few minutes to review that sandbox for me I would be very grateful. I don't think there is anything even remotely controversial there. Just the basic cleanup of duplicate parameters and the switch to the pushpin map code (the current Infobox code has TWO location maps... Facepalm ). If you feel this one needs a week or two to wait for objections, I'm more than happy to do that as I do realize it is an extensive refactor. Appreciate you cleaning up some of the map conversions I've done. Super helpful having a second set of eyes on them. Question though. Special:Diff/1362427509/1364036524. File:Red pog.svg is already the default. So is there a reason to add that? Also is there a reason that the default size of 8 should be overridden to 7? 1 pixel surely won't make that big a difference. To be clear, NOT a hill I'm going to die on. I was looking at the diffs to see if any of the styles have changed in the infobox code: I didn't check the default values. I can remove File:Red pog.svg, no problem. I have not. That is why this one (UNESCO) is getting a more thorough look, and why I really wanted you to give it a good look, because it IS a change. At the moment, UNESCO has 2 different incarnations of Location Map. One that displays at the bottom and one that displays at the top. You make a good point that I should make explicit in my comments on the talk page that I am merging the two in favor of the more commonly used map at the top of the Infobox.

BUT, to answer your question (as I understand it), if I come across an Infobox where the map is further down, I am NOT moving the map from that location. Template:Infobox individual golf tournament is a good example of this. The map was at the bottom before my changes, I kept it as such when I converted to the new format.

FWIW, the reason I have been using the longer, uncessary code of | pushpin_relief = {{if empty|{{{relief|}}}|{{{pushpin_relief|}}}}} (for example) is that when I generate the list of deprecated parameters, I have a script that I run that checks for all the {{If empty}} calls on the page and throws those values into the deprecated parameters list. Once I finish the deprecation, I ALWAYS come back and clean up the code. No objection to your changing it, but just wanted to shed some light on why I was doing it that way for the short term. Can you check my logic here? Line 29 of {{Infobox NRHP}} has {{#if:{{both|{{{locmapin|}}}|{{{coordinates|}}}{{#switch:{{#property:P625}}|unknown value|=|#default=1}}}}|{{Location map|{{if empty|{{{locmapin|}}}|USA}}|border=...}}}} My read of that is that the default value of USA doesn't actually do anything because if {{{locmapin}}} is empty, then the code never even reaches that {{if empty}} check. FYI re Special:Diff/prev/1367465267, first sorry. Second should definitely NOT be the case with mainspace. I use a much more rigorous regex when I am cleaning up articles that specifically looks for param names: (^\s*\|\s*)(PARAM_NAME)(\s*=.*$\n). When I went back to clean up the testcases I did it the lazy way because it was quicker. Just overlooked that issue. Thank you for catching it. Just an FYI, I don't have the energy for another fight. Based on this comment I may well just pull out of making any changes to {{Infobox mountain}} and let that be the one Infobox that doesn't align with literally every other one that uses Module:Location map. To be clear, I am NOT CANVASSING for your support here! I know you already follow that thread and will already see my response. But I wanted to say directly to you that both you and Jonesey95 have been very helpful with this project. I guess I just wanted to let you know I'm running out of energy to fight these fights and may have to walk away from this one.

Again, thank you for all the help that you have been with this project. You have caught a number of my errors, cleaned up code I have written and generally improved the overall functionality greatly from the first inception of this unified format. We have disagreed a few times and you have very rightly voiced concerns for some of my actions, but you have always been straight with me and always been respectful and assumed good faith.
