Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Christianity

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion and merging of articles related to Christianity. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Christianity|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Christianity. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

Keep — I think the available sources are sufficient to establish notability under WP:GNG, and the article can be improved rather than deleted.

There is independent coverage of Michael High School, Kurla in several publications over a number of years. This includes The Indian Express, which has published multiple reports specifically involving the school, including a 2017 report on a consumer commission case involving the school and its response, as well as a 2018 report concerning an incident at the school. There is also an Indian Express report on the Police Didi programme at Michael High School, which includes comments from the principal.

Sources:

There is also independent coverage from The Times of India concerning Jean Moses Gomes, then principal of Michael High School, including discussion of her recognition as an educationist and the development of the institution:

https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/genelia-awarded-for-promoting-east-indian-culture-through-wedding-rituals/articleshow/20115948.cms

Daijiworld published a substantial article about Gomes receiving the National Award for Teachers. The article identifies her as principal of C.E.S. Michael High School and provides background about the institution, including its history and development:

https://www.daijiworld.com/news/newsDisplay?newsID=149273

There is also a publication from the National Centre for School Leadership under NIEPA which contains a case study specifically on C.E.S.'s Michael High School, Kurla (W), Mumbai. The case study, titled Our Mission to Curb Environment Degradation, (refer page no 97-98 of the publication / 113-114 of the pdf) discusses environmental initiatives undertaken by the school. This is useful additional independent institutional documentation rather than a school directory or the school's own website:

https://ncsl.niepa.ac.in/schoolleadershipacademy/pdf/maharashtra/Case%20Studies/2022-2023/MH22CSBooklet.pdf

There are further references in Mumbai Mirror and other publications, but I don't think it is necessary to rely on every available listing or directory. The school's own website, social-media accounts and sites such as Justdial, Yellow Slate, UniApply and Careers360 can be useful for verifying basic details, but I would not count them towards establishing GNG because they are either primary sources or directory-style sources.

The important point here is that there is independent coverage from multiple publications, spanning different years and covering more than just the school's existence. The NIEPA/NCSL publication also contains a dedicated case study about an initiative at the school.

I don't think the absence of sufficient citations in the current article should be treated as evidence that the subject itself is not notable. The available sources can be added to the article and the article can be rewritten to remove any material that isn't supported by independent sources.

For these reasons, I think the appropriate outcome is to keep and improve the article rather than delete it.

Source assessment table
Source Independent? Reliable? Significant coverage? Count source toward GNG?
Die Chronik Des Hippolytos
Yes No Translation of an ancient text No Only says "And Uz and Hul, from whom are begotten the Lydians." No
Genesis 10:23 and 1 Chronicles 1:17
No The bible No Just mentioned in a list No
Antiquities 1:6:4
Yes No Translation of an ancient text No Only says "Ul founded Armenia" No
Yes Yes No Two sentences in a dictionary entry No
Yes No Book advancing pseudoscientific views on the origin of Chinese people No Just mentioned in a list No
This table may not be a final or consensus view; it may summarize developing consensus, or reflect assessments of a single editor. Created using {{source assess table}}.
  • Comment We have five sources in the article. Four of them are unreliable; three are ancient texts, and the fourth is pseudoscience nonsense. The fifth source is reliable, and also contains the most coverage of Hul, but even it has just two sentences. There are no sources that contribute to WP:GNG, and there is no relevant WP:SNG that would let us keep this article. BilledMammal (talk) 05:08, 23 September 2026 (UTC)reply

I propose merging to Sunday school because that page already lists "Sabbath school" as an alternative name, with an Easter Egg link on the word "sabbatarian" pointing to this one. However, I'm not an expert in the topic, so if there are sufficient doctrinal differences for separate articles, they should instead be cross-linked more clearly. There's also inconsistency in capitalisation between the two, and I'm not sure if that's deliberate. IMSoP (talk) 12:10, 31 August 2026 (UTC)reply

I am not saying that I would necessarily support a reverse merge, because Sunday School still remains the common name. However, if a merger was done, I wouldn't necessarily object to it. Kind regards, AnupamTalk 21:23, 31 August 2026 (UTC)reply
Rather than talking about "reverse merges", I'd rather look at this as two separate questions:
  1. Are there two different topics which deserve their own articles, or are there just a range of variations best discussed in one place?
  2. If there is only one topic, what is the best name for an article about it under Wikipedia's naming policies?

  • Can you expand on that a bit? If there is a clear difference, it would be helpful if you could suggest some wording which could be added to both articles explaining how they relate. - IMSoP (talk) 15:52, 1 September 2026 (UTC)reply
Comment Sunday school is not even close to Sabbath School. In the Seventh-day Adventist Church all ages attend Sabbath school and for those who are not able to go to church they can watch online or on the satellite at: https://itiswritten.tv/sabbath-school and https://hopetv.org/shows/hope-sabbath-school.
Adult education on Sundays is a thing in many churches, actually. Mangoe (talk) 00:23, 2 September 2026 (UTC)reply
User:Catfurball, please do not remove information from this article, especially during an active AfD. Sabbath School is a term historically used by first-day Sabbatarians, as well as by seventh-day Sabbatarians. AnupamTalk 04:33, 10 September 2026 (UTC)reply

It is not against Wikipedia policy to remove material from an article during a vote, the only thing that should not be removed is a deletion template or a merge template during a discussion. Catfurball (talk) 15:11, 10 September 2026 (UTC)reply

Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Relisting comment: Being two different things is not a valid argument against merging. Most merged articles are not about an identical topic, but one where readers are better served at seeing both topics on one page.

  • Reverse Merge - Merging Sunday School to Sabbath School makes a lot of sense to me. Sunday is the sabbath for those denominations that call it Sunday School and there is evidence that some in those denominations refer to it as Sabbath School. It appears there is significant overlap in the format and content of the two events and to a layman they would appear to be ostensibly the same. The articles have significant overlap and cover the same ground in places.
BleachPuffin (talk) 16:00, 8 September 2026 (UTC)reply
  • Comment - Where people's opposition is that Sabbath School is not the same as Sunday school for certain denominations, I am not sure this is an argument that prevents merging, we can just have a separate section for the denominations that have significantly different interpretations of how it works. The alternative (and not something I support) is that a new article be created called for example Sabbath School in Seventh Day Adventism.
BleachPuffin (talk) 16:05, 8 September 2026 (UTC)reply

Oppose merge. I can only put a UK perspective, but the UK is an appreciable source of en-wp users and editors. In the UK, the seventh day adventists are an extremely small church, less than 40,000 members, and despite this, they account for nearly all UK Christians who adopt Saturday as their main holy day in the week. As such, and per WP:COMMONNAME, in the UK at least, it's completely inappropriate to do a reverse-merge of Sunday school into Sabbath School. It is quite simple: almost no one calls it a Sabbath School. From a UK perspective we shouldn't change the name used over a very long period by a large number of large denominations, merely to satisfy one small denomination. The other way round, the adherence of the 7th-day Adventists to Saturday as the Sabbath is utterly key to their faith. Moving their school, which clearly does not take place on a Sunday to Sunday school would be insanely illogical as well as downright offensive. So it's much easier to leave things as they are. Elemimele (talk) 16:44, 8 September 2026 (UTC)reply

I understand the sensitivity of the naming, but it feels like there's a leap in logic from "both possible names are problematic" to "keep two separate articles". If there are going to be two articles, what goes in each?
As I said in my initial proposal, I'm not an expert by any means, on this or any other aspect of Christianity. I'm coming to this as a reader: if there is a difference other than the name, Wikipedia currently fails to explain to me what it is.
Both articles discuss how practice varies between denominations, and in fact looking closely I see both articles currently have a section on Methodist practice! So to those opposed to merging, I make this request: please propose how the pages should be structured so that a non-expert can learn from them rather than simply reading the same content twice. - IMSoP (talk) 21:27, 8 September 2026 (UTC)reply
I'd be okay about separating them out, and having this article concentrating entirely on the 7th-day Adventist approach? I'd say if an organisation calls its education-on-the-Sabbath a Sabbath school, put it in this article. If it calls it a Sunday School, put it in the Sunday school article. Elemimele (talk) 09:31, 9 September 2026 (UTC)reply
According to other commenters in this discussion, "separate article for 7th-Day Adventists" and "separate article for anyone who calls it Sabbath School" are two distinct proposals: there are apparently "first-day Sabbatarian" denominations which at least sometimes call it "Sabbath school".
And it doesn't really answer my question: as a reader, who has no background in any of these traditions, what am I supposed to understand from that article structure? If "Sunday school" ends up covering 10 denominations, and "Sabbath school" another 3, what non-duplicate summary will form the lead of each page?
There is a very clear statement of policy at Wikipedia is Not Censored:

Attempting to ensure that articles and images will be acceptable to all readers, or will adhere to general social or religious norms, is incompatible with the purposes of an encyclopedia.

I understand the desire to minimise the offense caused to one Christian group or the other, but I'm still looking for a reason why having two separate articles leads to a better encyclopedia. - IMSoP (talk) 11:30, 10 September 2026 (UTC)reply
User:IMSoP, as we speak, User:Catfurball is edit warring to remove all information related to first-day Sabbatarians from the article in order to make it exclusively about seventh-day Sabbatarian denominations. I would appreciate if you could please investigate this as this is not appropriate while this AfD is occurring. Thanks, AnupamTalk 16:06, 10 September 2026 (UTC)reply
@Anupam I don't know what you expect me to "investigate". I have no authority, and frankly no interest in wading into the middle of an argument between two strangers. IMSoP (talk) 21:36, 10 September 2026 (UTC)reply

Oppose reversing mergin Sunday school into sabbath school makes absolutely no sense. I cannot see why Sabbath School could not be a subsection of the much larger and common Sunday school use. 7th day adventists and other small groups having a practice doesn't by itself justify an article or let alone a reverse merge. AadamentAardvark (talk) 19:36, 9 September 2026 (UTC)reply

Delete and Redirect to Seventh-day Adventist Church, which has a worship service section. By doing a Google search, Sabbath school is not notable and does not deserve an article. Catfurball (talk) 15:25, 10 September 2026 (UTC)reply
You just now removed all of the information pertaining to first-day Sabbatarians (such as Methodists and Reformed) who term the concept Sabbath School and now you're arguing for this? Please stop being ridiculous. AnupamTalk 16:03, 10 September 2026 (UTC)reply
You want the article redirected to "Seventh-day Adventist Church" and deleted anything on there about first-day Sabbatarian denominations that have used the term "Sabbath School", such as historically, Methodists. You will stop edit warring and let the discussion here continue. AnupamTalk 20:01, 10 September 2026 (UTC)reply
Then you should add that to the article, for many of the references that you added are not verifiable. And by the way reference one that you added does not work. Catfurball (talk) 20:32, 10 September 2026 (UTC)reply
There are a number of references that are books, which you can check out from your library if you wish to learn about the history of Sabbath Schools. Not all references are websites. AnupamTalk 20:40, 10 September 2026 (UTC)reply
Those who support a merge I did find this story https://www.baptistpress.com/resource-library/news/should-we-rename-sunday-school/ Catfurball (talk) 21:32, 10 September 2026 (UTC)reply
Support – Even if they're different, the concepts are best understood in the context of the same article per WP:PAGEDECIDE. Keeping the information is two separate pages is just more confusing. FaviFake (talk) 10:54, 11 September 2026 (UTC)reply
  • Comment - I completely agree that the concepts are best understood in the context of the same article. As @IMSoP said on 1st September, given there seems to be no appetite for merging in either direction and retaining one of the article titles, we could look to follow TITLEVAR and decide on a title that is amenable to the varying denominations that this issue is pertinent to. Perhaps something along the lines of "Christian church based education".

Yes, if the information must be merged to a single article, giving it a generic title using neither the words "Sabbath school" nor "Sunday school" would avoid the problem. I would recommend providing redirects to the new article from both the old locations. One of the issues the new article will have to address is the sheer diversity of how the terms are used. They range from very formal educational situations to something that's nothing more than a kid's club to keep small children happy while the parents do a more boring form of worship! • Comment: As the article title seems to be playing a part in this, I just want to make it clear to editors here that if the merge happens in either direction then a requested move is all but guaranteed to result in the title ending up being "Sunday school" per WP:COMMONNAME (see Ngrams comparison). –Maltazarianparleyinvestigate 04:52, 16 September 2026 (UTC)reply
  • Support: The two are substantially the same concept, and can only be meaningfully distinguished for the minority of Christians who meet on Saturdays instead of Sundays, in whose case "Sunday" school would be a misnomer. With that being said, there doesn't seem to be a good name for the merged page. "Sunday school" is not the correct name for those Saturday-meeting churches, whereas "Sabbath school" is too technical and not commonly used outside of SDA. A generic name is also not ideal given that pandenominationally "Sunday school" is overwhelmingly the commoner name. Ashorocetus (talk|contribs) 08:51, 18 September 2026 (UTC)reply
